In 1947 Fred Ashley Sr. started Tygh Valley Sand & Gravel with a 2½-yard mixer and a Farmall tractor. He and his sons Bob and Fred Jr. busted 94 pound sacks of cement with their hands and dug sand and gravel from their land near the White River. With blood, sweat and strong family behind them, the business grew, laying the foundation for chairlifts at Mount Hood Meadows & pools at KahNeeTah to name just a few. In 1990, the company struck out in The Dalles, starting The Dalles Concrete
and eventually earning jobs for Safeway and Ernst in the ‘90s and the Dakine building just last year. The company, now run by Fred Jr., Chuck and Fred Ashley, has gone from loading four trucks with concrete per day to 34 loads in four hours with a new computerized batch plant, 18 employees and 12 cement trucks. The only locally owned and operated concrete company
in the region, The Dalles Concrete thanks those that have supported and helped grow the business with their patronage.
